This is one of my favorite photos from our China Adoption trip in November, 2001. When we traveled again in 2011, I saw very few people that dressed in Mao-era Chinese clothing. That first triip was the end of an era. China has raced forward in the last decade at blinding speeds. This photo is grainy because we purchased our first digital camera (2 megapixels!) and had no idea how to use it. We kept it on the email-quality setting the entire trip having no idea there were different settings, so all our photos look like this. At first I was heartbroken at the poor quality, but as the years pass I find these photos more and more haunting. The poor quality adds to the feel.
